What is Zen?

"Zen" is the Japanese translation of the abbreviated form - ch'an - of the Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit word, dhyana, which means meditation.

Now you know what "Zen" is.

But this answer, while true, is not very enlightening about the essence of Zen. Most articles concerning Zen and the Art of Something don't really address Zen as much as they address the Something in the context of a Zen concept; e.g., "being in the moment" while doing voir dire. Such articles are very helpful about the Something, but leave many readers thirsty for more information about Zen after having been hooked by the catchy article title. In subsequent articles, I will address Zen as well as the Somethings in the contexts of various Zen concepts.
